Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding Recipe

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup white rice

  • 2 cups water

  • 4 cups whole milk

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup raisins

  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cool water. In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and water. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes until the water is absorbed.

  2. Add the milk, sugar, and salt to the cooked rice. Stir well and cook over low heat for 25–30 minutes. Stir often so the rice becomes creamy and smooth without sticking to the pan.

  3. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs. Slowly add a few spoonfuls of the hot rice mixture into the eggs while whisking. This helps warm the eggs gently.

  4. Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Continue cooking on low heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring constantly until the pudding thickens.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, butter, and raisins.

  6. Spoon the pudding into serving bowls. Sprinkle cinnamon on top for extra flavor. Serve warm for a cozy dessert or chill in the refrigerator for a refreshing treat.

Tips

  • Use whole milk for the richest texture.

  • Add nutmeg or a little lemon zest for extra flavor.

  • The pudding thickens more as it cools. Stir in a splash of milk before serving if needed.

Creamy, comforting, and lightly sweet, this old-fashioned rice pudding is a timeless dessert perfect for family dinners or relaxing evenings.
