These homemade dinner rolls are soft, fluffy, buttery, and golden brown, with a delicious glossy glaze. Perfect for dinner, holidays, sandwiches, or serving alongside soups and curries.
📝 Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk
- 2¼ tsp (7 g) active dry yeast
- ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 4 tbsp (56 g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp salt
For the Glaze:
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tbsp honey (optional)
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
Pour warm milk into a bowl. Add sugar and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
2. Make the dough
Add the egg, melted butter, and salt. Mix well. Gradually add the flour and stir until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes, until smooth, soft, and elastic. The dough should be slightly tacky but not excessively sticky.
4. First rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
5. Shape the rolls
Punch down the dough gently and divide it into 18–20 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball by pulling the edges underneath.
Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or round baking pan, leaving a little space between them.
6. Second rise
Cover and let the rolls rise again for 30–45 minutes, until they become puffy and nearly double in size.
7. Bake
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 18–23 minutes, until the tops are beautifully golden brown.
8. Brush with glaze
Mix the melted butter with honey, if using. Immediately brush the hot rolls generously with the glaze.
9. Serve
Let them cool for about 5–10 minutes, then pull apart and serve warm. 🧈✨
⭐ Tips for Extra-Soft Rolls
Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, so you don’t kill the yeast.
Don’t add too much flour—the dough should remain soft.
Kneading well helps create a light, fluffy texture.
Don’t skip the second rise.
